Plane traveling to San Francisco

Thank you for applying to English Language Institute!

We offer excellent Intensive English as a Second Language, Business English, iBT TOEFL Test Preparation, University Preparation, and Tutoring programs in downtown San Francisco. We are excited to meet you soon! You have applied for an Initial I-20. An initial I-20 can be used to apply for a new F1 student visa at a US Consulate outside of the United States.

Items Required to Issue an I-20

Here are the items we need to complete your application, issue you an I-20 (document required for F-1 visa holders), and email it to you.
US Embassies/Consulates now accept PDFs of electronically signed I-20s.

  • Your city of birth.
  • Your full address (including street name and house/building number, city, state/province, and zip code).

Helpful Tips for Completing I-20 Application

  • Please reply to all emails using the same email thread. This will make it much easier to process your application. Please do NOT send a new email for each communication.
  • Please send all your documents as PDF attachments to your email. Please do NOT send zip files or Google docs.
  • Please respond to our emails quickly. If you are having trouble with any part of your application - or need more time - still email us. We will hold your application as long as you are communicating with us.

Information about Bank Statement

  • You can use your own bank statement or a sponsor’s bank statement. You can also use both your bank statement AND a sponsor’s bank statement. If you use a sponsor’s bank statement, then they must complete the Sponsorship Form on the last page of this document.
  • The bank statement must show the following information

The name of the bank
The name of the account holder
The date (must be within the last 6 months)
The total amount of money in the account.
You do NOT need to show your account number or transaction history.
Your account does NOT have to be in USD. It can be in any currency.

  • Your bank statements must show at least $2,000 for EACH month listed on your I-20 study period. For example, if you apply to study for four months, then you must show $2,000 x 4 = $8,000. (Please see chart below)
  • If you need an F2 visa for a dependent (spouse or child) then you must show an additional $500 PER MONTH PER DEPENDENT.

Applying for the F-1 Visa

After you receive your I-20, you will need to complete three additional steps.

  • Pay your SEVIS fee. This fee is $350 paid to the US Government for your student ID number while you study in the United States. You will find your unique SEVIS ID number on the top left corner of your I-20 document from ELI. Pay your fee online here: SEVIS fee. You must pay this fee before entering the USA.
  • Complete the USA Government Online visa application at Online Nonimmigrant Visa Application (DS-160) and pay the $185 government fee.
  • Schedule an F-1 Visa appointment with the US Embassy or Consulate in your country. Find the embassy or consulate nearest you at: www.usembassy.gov. You will need the SEVIS number on the top left side of your I-20 to schedule your F-1 Visa interview.

In this link is a very detailed page explaining the F-1 visa application process. It includes a section where you can enter the US Embassy or Consulate nearest to you to see the current visa interview wait time at that location.

Preparing for the F-1 Visa Appointment

During your F-1 visa appointment, you will be asked to show:

  • Proof of Financial Ability.
Do you have enough money to live and study in the United States for the time period shown on your I-20 without working illegally in the USA? Bring proof of your financial ability to your F-1 Visa appointment.
  • Proof of Connections to Your Home Country.
Do you have family, financial support, property, a job offer or other reasons to return to your home country? Provide proof to show that you plan to return to your home country after studying in the USA.
  • Strong Study Plan.
Do you have a good reason to study in the USA? Why do you need to study English? Do you plan to attend a US college or university after this or return home? How long will your study plan take you? Be prepared to answer questions like these at the F-1 Visa appointment.
